Areas of Bertie county have received between 10-15 inches of rain this week and it is causing major flooding issues within the county. Numerous roads have been closed causing school and business closures. Along with those closures many peoples homes have been flooded, which sadly a lot of people in the county have become accustomed to. The river will crest Friday at 15.8 feet, which is above the major flood level for the river. In 1999 and 2010 the river has flooded bringing damage to many homes and businesses in the area. In 2010 the levels rose to 15.7 foot and in 1999 they got as high as 18.6 foot. The river will likely crest overnight Thursday. A shelter has been setup at Bertie Middle School for anyone whose home has been flooded. Travel in the area is limited due to many roads being flooded therefore motorist should avoid the area.
