We are now in the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and it looks like the next few weeks will be busy as far as the tropics are concerned. We now have 2 systems in the Atlantic that we are monitoring. One is Tropical Storm Fiona and the other is a tropical wave that just moved off the African coast. Below are our outlooks for both.
Tropical Storm Fiona
Tropical Storm Fiona formed in the Atlantic ocean late today and now has max winds of 45 mph. This system is expected to strengthen some over the coming days, but it looks like after the weekend the wind shear will weaken the system before it is able to reach hurricane strength. Otherwise the water temps are well above what is needed to produce a hurricane. As for the track of this system it is still way out in the Atlantic, so the track could change substantially based on a number of factors. Right now it looks as this storm will steer clear of the United States and push north into the Atlantic. This is subject to change so be sure to check back often as we will be providing updates on this system daily.
Tropical Wave Near Cabo Verde
There is currently a tropical wave that moved off the coast of Africa today a few hundred miles to the east of Fiona that has been given a 20% chance of developing into a tropical system. This system as of now is just a cluster of thunderstorms, though the environment will be good for development of this system over the coming days. It’s way to early to provide any type of forecast concerning this system, but we will continually provide updates on this system as needed.
