SevereWXWarn started out in 2011 as a project to build a personal weather map for myself that I couldn’t find anywhere on the web. I did so and completed the map in late 2011 after a major tornado outbreak in my state that hit hard in my hometown in April of that year. Once I completed the project I decided to make it public through a website, which at that time was Eastern NC Severe Weather Warn, because I believed if I benefited from the map that others could as well and it could possibly help keep people safe and save lives during severe weather outbreaks. In 2013 I decided that it was time for a name change for the site and rebranding, because I believed that the map could reach more than just the people of Eastern NC. At that time I decided to go with SevereWXWarn and start this as a national and now worldwide brand. In 2013 and 2014 I set out to develop new maps and forecasting parameters for the site with the site only seeing a couple thousand views during those years. Going into 2015 I had a lot of maps and information on the site, but we didn’t seem to be reaching the number of people I would consider successful. With strategic META Keywords I began posting forecasts throughout the internet and on social media, which brought us 170,000 viewers in a single day on February 12, 2015 during a snowstorm on the east coast. From that point on we have seen at least 3,000 viewers per day using the site. In the summer of 2015 I started to go over the data and from what I was seeing over 75% of our site use was coming from mobile phones and tablets and that just a small portion was coming from our desktop users, so I decided to take SevereWXWarn to the next level. In July I began creating Android Apps starting with a single application to test the market and success before developing more applications on multiple platforms. After a couple month’s of success on Android I decided to launch my applications on Apple in November. The applications were also a success on Apple. We now have had over 100,000 downloads on both platforms and have been ranked in the top 50 downloaded applications on Android and the top 150 on Apple. SevereWXWarn is continuing to grow and develop new technologies. Just this week we launched a new forecasting system on both desktop and mobile. Going into 2016 we currently have over 50 applications on Android and Apple with over 100,000 downloads as well as our desktop platform with over 1.2 million views. We are projecting a great year in 2016 with over 500,000 app downloads and 7-9 million website views. 2016 should open many doors for SevereWXWarn to prosper and grow with the demand. We plan to develop over 50 new applications and technologies in 2016 and to overhaul the site to better compete with the major players in the weather industry. Thanks for your continued support in 2015 and we look forward to a great 2016 with you.
