Winter Storm Helena has been bringing snow to the Western and Central United States and is slowly making its way east this week and will likely bring some snow to the Eastern US with the bulk of the snowfall being in the Carolina’s and Virginia. The bulk of the snowfall will likely be late Friday night into Saturday. The amount of snowfall for areas in the Mid-Atlantic region is highly dependent on the track of this system. Small shifts in the track of this system could drastically change the snowfall totals especially for areas in the Carolina’s and Virginia. As of now the highest snowfall totals will possibly be in the Northeastern NC and Southeastern VA region with decent amounts of accumulation likely for Central and Eastern NC & VA. South Carolina’s biggest chance for snow accumulation will be in the Eastern portions of the state. The map shown below is a preliminary guess for the snowfall totals for this weekend and could change as the models work out the kinks. We have gone with a more conservative approach and have sided more with the NAM model. The GFS model has shown higher accumulations, but we will likely have a better idea of what to expect on Thursday. We will provide another update on this system later in the day on Thursday. If you are in any of the major accumulation areas below I would plan ahead just incase.
