Tropical Storm Fay officially formed off the Outer Banks of North Carolina with maximum winds of 45 MPH. The storm is currently about 40 miles east of Cape Hatteras and is moving north at 7 MPH. The Tropical Storm Warning has been issued from Cape May, NJ northward into the Long Island Sound. Movement is expected to continually speed up over the next few days with a northeastern movement. The forecast track puts the storm center near the mid atlantic coast on Friday and move inland over the northeastern US on Saturday. Tropical storm force winds currently extend 140 miles from the center, so the mid-atlantic region and northeastern US can expect a breezy and wet weekend. 3-5 inches of rainfall are expected from the storm.
