Hurricane Hugo made landfall on September 21, 1989 in a small town near Charleston, SC called McCleanville. The storm caused a total of 34 fatalities with 27 of those being in South Carolina. Hugo caused 10 billion dollars in damage, which at the time made this the most costly storm in history. Since Hugo there have only been 10 more costly hurricanes to make landfall in the U.S. When Hugo made landfall it was a category 4 storm making it a major hurricane. The track took this storm straight up the mountain and piedmont regions of North Carolina with it still remaining a strong tropical storm as it tore threw the North Carolina mountains. This caught many in the western regions by surprise since many people fled inland from the coastal areas of North and South Carolina. Hugo is one of those storms that everyone in the Carolina’s have heard about whether you were living at the time or not. The first reason is that this was one of the few major hurricanes to make landfall in the U.S. especially in the Carolina’s. Also the unique path and affects of this storm are another reason that it is remembered. I affected areas that are often not affected by hurricanes in the Carolina’s. Hurricane Hugo will be remembered for a long time to come because of it’s size, strength and the damage part that it left behind.
