Temperatures tonight will drop to dangerous levels across much of the Eastern US as well as the Northcentral US. Temperatures in some areas could get as low as -20. This temperatures will be dangerously cold so if you have to be outside you will need to be prepared. Even if you are planning on traveling you will need to be prepared just incase you have vehicle problems.
Preparing your car:
1. Test your vehicles battery, heating system, exhaust and check your fluids to be sure everything works properly
2. Get an emergency kit for your car with at least a blanket, some food and water, an extra layer of clothes and jumper cables.
3. Always take a phone and let someone know where you are going. Stay in contact with someone along the trip, so someone knows where you are.
Preparing your house:
1. Keep a backup heat source for your family. Incase the electricity goes out you will need a backup plan whether it’s a space heater or a fireplace to keep warm.
2. You will also need a winter weather safety kit, which should have extra blankets, food and water, flashlights, a shovel and an extra heavy layer of clothes.
Stay safe during the winter weather/extreme cold. If you don’t have a home or a vehicle to keep warm be sure and find a shelter early. If you have an elder person in your family or neighborhood ask them to stay with you or check on them regularly. Never sleep in a vehicle with the ignition on due to the threat of carbon monoxide gas from the exhaust system. Stay safe and stay warm during the extreme cold tonight.
